Dear Lifehacker, I'm building a new gaming PC using your guidebut I have one question: Is running two graphics cards worth it? Some people tell me I can get more bang for my buck with two midrange cards, but others say I should get one high-end card instead. Which is true? However, whether it's worth it is another story. Here's what you need to know.
To run SLI or Crossfire on your system, you need a few things: a compatible motherboard, two compatible video cards, and a "bridge" that connects the two cards together these usually come with your motherboard or video cards. They don't have to be from the same manufacturer, they just have to both be GTX Tis.
Crossfire has a bit more wiggle room, allowing you to pair some GPUs with other similar cards—like a Radeon with a Radeon Tom's Hardware also has a great FAQ if you're interested in finding out more. Once you install both cards and the necessary bridge, you can open up your driver's control panel and enable SLI or Crossfire. Make sure your drivers are up to date and play a game—if your drivers support SLI or Crossfire for that game, you'll notice a significant performance boost.
It won't be exactly twice the performance, and every game will be a little different, but in many games you should find that everything runs more smoothly—with some exceptions. So why would you run multiple video cards? The main reason people go for it is its price to performance ratio. It varies from card to card, but in some cases, running two mid-range cards is slightly cheaper than running one comparable high-end card.
You can get the same performance for a few bucks cheaper. They're also ideal for multi-monitor or high-resolution gaming.
Plus, they look sweetand some people just want to make their rig look as baller as possible. So that sounds awesome, right? Unfortunately, running multiple cards comes with some cons.

We can't tell you what will work for you, but I almost always try to go with a powerful single card rather than two cards in SLI or Crossfire. The initialism SLI was first used by 3dfx for Scan-Line Interleavewhich was introduced to the consumer market in and used in the Voodoo2 line of video cards.
After buying out 3dfx, Nvidia acquired the technology but did not use it. SLI allows two, three, or four graphics processing units GPUs to share the workload when rendering real-time 3D computer graphics. Ideally, identical GPUs are installed on the motherboard that contains enough PCI Express slots, set up in a master-slave configuration.
All graphics cards are given an equal workload to render, but the final output of each card is sent to the master card via a connector called the SLI Bridge.
For example, in a two graphics card setup, the master works on the top half of the scene, the slave the bottom half.
Once the slave is done, it sends its render to the master to combine into one image before sending it to the monitor. The SLI bridge is used to reduce bandwidth constraints and send data between both graphics cards directly. It is possible to run SLI without using the bridge connector on a pair of low-end to mid-range graphics cards e.
XX or later. Since these graphics cards do not use as much bandwidth, data can be relayed through just the chipsets on the motherboard. However, if there are two high-end graphics cards installed and the SLI bridge is omitted, the performance will suffer severely, as the chipset does not have enough bandwidth. Nvidia has created a set of custom video game profiles in cooperation with video game publishers that will automatically enable SLI in the mode that gives the largest performance boost.

This analyzes the rendered image in order to split the workload equally between the two GPUs. To do this, the frame is split horizontally in varying ratios depending on geometry. For example, in a scene where the top half of the frame is mostly empty sky, the dividing line will lower, balancing geometry workload between the two GPUs.
Each GPU renders entire frames in sequence.

For example, in a Two-Way setup, one GPU renders the odd frames, the other the even frames, one after the other. Finished outputs are sent to the master for display. Ideally, this would result in the rendering time being cut by the number of GPUs available.

Compositing both the results gives higher image quality than is normally possible.
This mode is not intended for higher frame rates, and can actually lower performance, but is instead intended for games which are not GPU-bound, offering a clearer image in place of better performance.
HybridPower, on the other hand, is another mode that is not for performance enhancement. The IGP would assist the GPU to boost performance when the laptop is plugged to a power socket while the MXM module would be shut down when the laptop was unplugged from power socket to lower overall graphics power consumption.
HybridPower was later renamed as Nvidia Optimus. It is similar to two regular bridges combined in one PCB. The signal quality of the bridge improved, however, as the SLI HB bridge has an adjusted trace-length to make sure all traces on the bridge have exactly the same length.
A PC gaming magazine has done research with x-rays for comparing SLI bridges with their SLI HB successors and found adjusted signal lengths by planned Meandering of certain wires so that clock rates can go up from MHz to MHz and thus the data rates along with that. With the increased bus width a noticeable bandwidth increase should be expected.

However, for P and 4K monitors, running an SLI configuration will help you play the game on higher settings without dropping to too low of a framerate. However, Shadow of War still received fairly positive reviews overall. Its graphics, however, help the game stand out, which, of course, means that the game will need a fairly decent system to run.
The game can be run on a P monitor with a budget-friendly GPU on lower-to-medium settings with no problems. However, at higher resolutions, more GPU power is necessary to get the game running at a decent framerate. And, fortunately, the game does support SLI—although, on launch date and soon after users found that their SLI-based system was actually delivering lower framerates.
The series has been immensely successful thanks to its reputation for being incredibly challenging. In terms of graphics, Dark Souls III is moderately demanding at P resolutions, but like all modern games with plus graphics, it will require a powerful gaming PC to run at P or 4K resolutions.
The game did come with SLI support at launch, but like most games, some users experienced difficulties when running it. This can be slower than one card doing all the work! This is because sending these textures from one card to another can be slower than doing a whole frame, if the whole frame can be done on one card. This is because the test program does not have to draw the world from the sky when it tests as X-Plane doesso when it tests fill rate, it does nothing else.
Thus, you see only fill rate performance. This has nothing to do with X-Plane because X-Plane is typically not fill rate-limited. As well, the test program might not copy textures back and forth between the cards. Again, the performance you see in the program has nothing to do with X-Plane, which must copy cloud shadows, reflections, and the like around between video cards. So, the bottom line is that these technologies can make the simulator slower, not faster, in many cases!
