The word "Romanichal" is derived from Romani chalwhere chal is Angloromani for "fellow". They can be found all over these areas, with counties like Kent, Surrey, Hampshire, Cambridgeshire, Gloucestershire and Yorkshire have especially high concentrations of Romanichal communities.
The Romanichal diaspora emigrated from Great Britain to other parts of the English-speaking world. Based on some estimates, there are now more people of Romanichal descent in the United States than in Britain. The two groups' dialects differ in accent and vocabulary. The Romani people in England are thought to have spoken the Romani language until the 19th century, when it was replaced by English and Angloromani, a creole language that combines the syntax and grammar of English with the Romani lexicon.
These two dialects along with the accents that accompany them have led to two regional Romanichal Traveller identities forming, these being the Southern Romanichal identity and the Northern Romanichal Traveller identity. Many Angloromani words have been incorporated into English, particularly in the form of British slang.
The Romani people have origins in Indiaspecifically Rajasthan and began migrating westwards from the 11th century. The first groups of Romani people arrived in Great Britain by the end of the 16th century, escaping conflicts in Southeastern Europe such as the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans.
In there are recorded Romani persons in Scotland arrived from Spain and to England in During the reign of Henry VIIIthe Egyptians Act banned Romanies from entering the country and required those living in the country to leave within 16 days. Failure to do so could result in confiscation of property, imprisonment and deportation. During the reign of Mary I the act was amended with the Egyptians Actwhich removed the threat of punishment to Romanies if they abandoned their "naughty, idle and ungodly life and company" and adopted a settled lifestyle, but it increased the penalty for noncompliance to death.
In a new law offered Romanies born in England and Wales the possibility of becoming English subjects if they assimilated into the local population. Despite persecution and this new option, the Romani were forced into a marginal lifestyle and subjected to continuous discrimination from the state authorities and many non-Romanies. Inmen and women were condemned to death at York just for being Romani, and nine were executed.
From the s, gradually, the anti-Romani laws were repealed, although not all. The identity of the Romanichals was formed between the years andas a Romani group living in Britain. Racism against Romanichal and other travelling peoples is still endemic within Britain. England began to deport Romanichals, principally to Norwayas early as Other European countries forced the further transport of the Romani of Britain to the Americas.
Many times those deported in this manner did not survive as an ethnic groupbecause of the separations after the round up, the sea passage and the subsequent settlement as slaves, all destroying their social fabric. The Roma are an ethnic people who have migrated across Europe for a thousand years. The Roma culture has a rich oral tradition, with an emphasis on family. Often portrayed as exotic and strange, the Roma have faced discrimination and persecution for centuries.
Today, they are one of the largest ethnic minorities in Europe — about 12 million to 15 million people, according to UNICEF, with 70 percent of them living in Eastern Europe. They are also known as Rom or Romany. The Travelers of Ireland are not ethnically Roma, but they are often considered part of the group.
The Roma are also sometimes called Gypsies. However, some people consider that a derogatory term, a holdover from when it was thought these people came from Egypt. The Romani people faced discrimination because of their dark skin and were once enslaved by Europeans. Inthe English Parliament passed a law that made being a Gypsy a felony punishable by death, according to the RSG.
The Roma have been portrayed as cunning, mysterious outsiders who tell fortunes and steal before moving on to the next town. As a matter of survival, the Roma were continuously on the move. They developed a reputation for a nomadic lifestyle and a highly insular culture. Because of their outsider status and migratory nature, few attended school and literacy was not widespread.
Much of what is known about the culture comes through stories told by singers and oral histories. The German word for Gypsy, "Zigeuner," was derived from a Greek root that meant "untouchable" and accordingly, the group was deemed "racially inferior.
Roma were rounded up and sent to camps to be used as labor or to be killed. During this time, Dr. Josef Mengele was also given permission to experiment with on twins and dwarves from the Romani community.
There were also camps called Zigeunerlager that were intended just for the Roma population. It is estimated that up toRoma died in the Holocaust.
Also, because the Roma people live scattered among other populations in many different regions, their ethnic culture has been influenced by interaction with the culture of their surrounding population.
Nevertheless, there are some unique and special aspects to Romani culture. The Roma do not follow a single faith; rather, they often adopt the predominant religion of the country where they are living, according to Open Society, and describe themselves as "many stars scattered in the sight of God. The Roma live by a complex set of rules that govern things such as cleanliness, purity, respect, honor and justice. These rules are referred to as what is "Rromano.
Some Romani words have been borrowed by English speakers, including "pal" brother and "lollipop" from lolo-phabai-cosh, red apple on a stick.
Traditionally, anywhere from 10 to several hundred extended families form bands, or kumpanias, which travel together in caravans.
Smaller alliances, called vitsas, are formed within the bands and are made up of families who are brought together through common ancestry. Each band is led by a voivode, who is elected for life. This person is their chieftain. In some groups, the elders resolve conflicts and administer punishment, which is based upon the concept of honor.
Do Gypsies have any distinct physical features?
Punishment can mean a loss of reputation and at worst expulsion from the community, according to the RSG. For Rroma, the basic 'unit' is constituted by the family and the lineage. Communities typically involve members of the extended family living together. A typical household unit may include the head of the family and his wife, their married sons and daughters-in-law with their children, and unmarried young and adult children.
Romani typically marry young — often in their teens — and many marriages are arranged. The purpose of this article is to educate people on Romany Gypsy spirituality and belief.
I wrote this article because the industry I am in spirituality seems to hold many misconceptions about us, our culture and what makes us Gypsies. Please keep an open mind when reading. I should start off this article explaining what Gypsies are as there seems to be some confusion about this. A Gypsy, Gitana, etc. These are all names for the Romany people.
No matter if they are living in France, Sudan, Russia or Cuba they will speak the same language, have the same beliefs and follow the same culture. All Gypsies are biologically related as one people. They are identifiable as one group who left India around years ago, possibly due to invasion.
We traveled West and spread out all over the world. Our language, Romani, is descended from a mix of Sanskrit an ancient Indian language Hindu and other Indian languages with some European influences.
At one point, Gypsies were believed to come from Egypt Gypsy is short for Egyptian. Only in recent times have people realized that Gypsies came from India. I will say some Gypsies married Gorgers, but this is not a standard practice. In genetic tests, Romany people are still mostly identifiable as Indian, and we still carry genetic disorders unknown outside of small pockets of Indian cities.
Just because these Romany people are living in these countries, does not mean they are a part of that culture, so it is wrong to refer to them as being Scottish, Mexican, etc. As far as we are concerned, we are Romany and Romany only. Living in a wagon and wearing an ankle bracelet does not make you a Gypsy. You have to be born and raised in Gypsy culture to be ethnically Romany. Even then, biology is not enough to be accepted by other Gypsies as one of us; you must follow our laws and rules to be considered a Gypsy by other Gypsies.
A pure Gypsy could be considered an outsider Gorger and an adopted child would be a Gypsy if the adopted child followed our rules and the pure blood did not. Following our laws and rules results in a pure life. Gorgers do not live by our laws and rules, so we believe culturally and spiritually this is what separates us from them.If we can't tunnel through the Earth, how do we know what's at its center?

Romanian People wear normal clothes.Data provided by the social sciences as well as genetic research suggest that the million Roma Gypsies who live in Europe today are best described as a conglomerate of genetically isolated founder populations. The relationship between the traditional social structure observed by the Roma, where the Group is the primary unit, and the boundaries, demographic history and biological relatedness of the diverse founder populations appears complex and has not been addressed by population genetic studies.
Recent medical genetic research has identified a number of novel, or previously known but rare conditions, caused by private founder mutations. A summary of the findings, provided in this review, should assist diagnosis and counselling in affected families, and promote future collaborative research.
The available incomplete epidemiological data suggest a non-random distribution of disease-causing mutations among Romani groups. Although far from systematic, the published information indicates that medical genetics has an important role to play in improving the health of this underprivileged and forgotten people of Europe.
To be most productive, future studies of the epidemiology of single gene disorders should take social organisation and cultural anthropology into consideration, thus allowing the targeting of public health programs and contributing to the understanding of population structure and demographic history of the Roma. The Roma Gypsies became one of the peoples of Europe around one thousand years ago, when they first arrived in the Balkans [ 12 ]. While human rights and socio-economic issues related to the Roma are increasingly becoming the focus of political debate and media coverage throughout Europe, their poor health status [[ 3 - 6 ]] is rarely discussed and still awaits the attention of the medical profession.
Romani population size in different European countries The collection of this type of data depends on declared ethnic identity which, in the case of the Roma, can be affected by a number of political and social circumstances. The estimates in the figure are the average of the numbers provided by different sources, such as census data, ministries of internal affairs and human rights organizations [ 2 ]. This review of genetic studies of the Roma was prompted by two recent developments: i Studies conducted over the last decade have resulted in the identification of a number of novel single gene disorders and disease-causing mutations.
The accumulating data are already sufficient to outline a pattern and draw conclusions about public health policies and future research. A predictable consequence of this new diaspora is that medical practitioners in many countries will encounter Romani patients with previously unknown or very rare disorders. A summary of the available information should facilitate diagnostic investigations and counselling in these affected families and stimulate international collaboration. Literature searches were performed using the U.
Database searches using the keyword "Gypsies" identified articles whilst the keyword "Gypsy" produced articles. The discrepancy is due mainly to the inclusion of articles about the "gypsy retransposable element" and the "gypsy moth". Searches using the terms "Roma", "Romani" and "Romany" yielded results that were not relevant to the topic eg.
